f/2.8

Best f/2.8 Lenses

f/2.8 is the professional zoom standard — bright enough for weddings, events, and indoor sports, and constant through the zoom range so the exposure doesn’t fall off as you go longer. On primes, f/2.8 is also the usual speed for macros and many medium-format lenses.

Our f/2.8 collection includes the zooms working photographers build kits around: Sony 24-70mm G Master and Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 for everyday and events, Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 for portraits and action, and the OM SYSTEM 50-200mm f/2.8 Pro for Micro Four Thirds. Fixed f/2.8 options include the Fujifilm GF 45mm for GFX and the Nikon Z 105mm macro for close-up and short-tele work.

Compared with f/4, you get more light and more background separation, at the cost of size and price. Compared with f/1.8 primes, you keep the flexibility of a zoom (or 1:1 macro). Confirm mount — RF, Sony E, Z, Micro Four Thirds, or GFX — then compare range, weight, and stabilization.
